I got a letter from GM a year or so back stating that they would fix my gages for free if my truck had under 70k miles on it.It was past that mileage and I hadn't experienced any problem.Last week the speedometer stuck at 75mph and the oil pressure gage pegged on an Interstate highway trip.A internet search of the subject turned up several repair stations with prices from $125 to $375 + shipping.And also learned that the cause of the problem was crummy stepping motors GM used from 1999-2004.A lifelong friend is the parts manager at a local Chevy/Cadillac dealership.By a coincidence I had stopped by to see him at work the week before.He asked what he could do for me,I replied nothing,I just wanted to ask how you're doing and catch up on the family news.His sister and my bride are Sunday school buddies so we mostly keep in touch through them unless I'm needing a part for the Chevy or Caddy.Yesterday I was back,this time asking about the instrument cluster.He went out to the truck and took the vin#,mileage,and hours.The new unit was in my hand at 11 AM today for a total cost of $195 + sales tax,lifetime guaranteed.The same price he could have bought it for himself,and he welcomed me as "employee of the day".Swapping out the cluster took maybe ten minuets all total.Fingernails for the trim piece,a 7mm nutdriver for the 4 screws,and one electrical connector to unplug.That was it! I thought I was facing a $500 or $600 project labor and all.Turned out a monkey can do it.
