36 years. US Army, US Army Reserve, Army National Guard (Wisconsin, Texas, New Jersey) . E1 through O5. It was a hoot! I'd sign up again tomorrow but I don't think they'd be interested in a retired 73 year old. Infantry, Artillery, Armor, Cavalry, Aviation, Military Police, General Staff. Basic training, Ft Leonard Wood, NCO Academy, Ft Carson, OCS Ft Benning, Ranger School Ft Benning, Artillery School Ft Sill, Armor School Ft Knox, Aviation School Ft Rucker.Crewed 4.2 mortars, 105 howitzers, M48-60 tanks, so many different helicopters and airplanes I've lost count. (OH-13, OH-23, CH-34, UH-1A,B,C,M,D,H, OH6, L-19, Beaver,etc. Test bed aircraft that had special designations. Fired and qualified in almost every weapon system the Army had at the time. Command and General Staff College. I am thankful every day that I talked my Dad into letting me join when I was 17 years old. You know what? My best friend who joined the Air Force had it even better. Here we were. Just a couple of dumbassed kids out of the midwest and he was flying B-47s all over the world at the age of twenty. What a great country to be a part of.
