How about you go first. Did you serve? Why Army, how about the Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines? I was Air Force 1960-1969, did not spend any Army time. Tom

Navy 1969 - 1972, radioman, communication station in the Phillippines and a Destroyer (DD 782) operating off Vietnam.

Navy from 1986 until 1992 so I"m a vet of the 1st Gulf war. I was a Machinist Mate 1st class (E-6) when I got out. I spent 2 years in the engine room of a Coontz class destroyer (the USS William V Pratt DDG-44), 2 more in the engine room of an aircraft carrier (the USS America CV-66) and the other two spread out between different schools and a brief tour of shore duty right before I got out.

I was in from 1980 through 2001. I started off as a Military Policeman. Changed over to a UH-1 crew chief, and when they did away with the Huey's I became a Flight Operations person.

Wish I could have stayed longer, but when I lost an eye to a garage door cable, they had all of me that they could stand i guess.

Told the recuiting Sgt not to put me behind a desk. I figured the USMC didn't have that many desks so I joined in May 1965. Sgt got me a three year enlistment.

During the classification tests at Parris Island, I pounded out 13 words per minute on their typewriter and they assigned me an admin man's MOS (0100).

Spent 16 months with a grunt company (K Co-3/6) at Camp Lejeune, NC. Reassigned to Nam (Dong Ha mostly) with another grunt Company (I Co-3/4) in Dec66 running the Company office. Never fired my M-14 but dodged alot of incoming.

My wife never served in the military, but she worked for the Air Force, Navy and the Army.
She had our daughter at the FT Bragg hospital. Back then it was a wooden bulding. The cost for that birth was $5.25. Hal

Like cj3b-jeep and Gary from Muleshoe I loaded munitions on aircraft. Joined USAF in Nov 67 to avoid draft and learn a trade to use when I got out in Nov 71. Stationed in Tx, Colo, Ohio, Tan San Nhut Ab, Viet Nam, and Arizona. If anyone needs napalm or 20mm loaded on the JD R or WD 45 get in touch.

They moved that school to Ft Lee, VA. I'm retired from APG. Started there in 1951 and was drafted in 1953. Rehired back in 1955. Retired in 1994 after 43 years. Hal

Army National Guard, 1969-1975. Sgt. E5, E Troop, 303d Armored Calvary, 81st Infantry Brigade. In those days, we joined the Guard to avoid Viet Nam (which worked for me). Now, join the Guard and meet Farouk. How times change.

I couldn't figure out why the service is able to continue to meet recruitment goals, in light of everybody getting multiple deployments. But I talked to a young fellow recently, and it turns out that the big hook for joining now is free college, period. Any where, any time. That's a pretty big benny, now, with college costs so high. The guy I talked to summed it up pretty well- "I feel I should serve my country- if I survive, I get free college; If I don't, well, I did my duty. Its a no-lose situation."

A little different outlook than I had 40 years ago, but I salute them for willingness to roll the dice.

Army Reserves from 1964 to 1970. Basic training at Fort Knox. AIT at Fort Leonard Wood. I was a combat engineer and you know that means, WORK.

71 to 77 TANG tx air nat guard.. radar on F100's...left as e5. worked next to the affairs office aka public office official News... aka as POON TANG..anyway figured eating in chow halls and sleeping in air conditioned barraks was better than laying in the swamp. air bases tended to be pretty far from the bang bang stuff.

LBFM,I remember that term. Olongapo, in the P.I. I am sure you flew into Cubi Point a few times Gordo. Nice bars on base there.
Leo ABH-2 U.S. Navy V-1 Divison, U.S.S. Coral Sea CVA-43 1970-1975. Three WestPac Cruises,Vietnam Vet.
"Shellback" in 1971."Airdale","Roof-Rat" "Yellowshirt","Catapult Spotter",Pick your title,.that was me.

I was in B-2-3 also, but by the time I got there, the Army had gotten rid of the horses and switched to single wing airplains

Drafted into U.S.Army July of 1966. Eight weeks basic at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, AIT in first class of MPs trained at FLW, and permanent duty with the 208th MP Company at FLW. Discharged via early out to go into civilian police work in May of 1968.

I was a whitecap MP which means patrol duty versus stockade guard.

One of the few that could type netted me the MP Station Desk Clerk duties, radio operator from time to time, temp typing assignment to MP Operations under Provost Marshall's office, and a couple of weeks assigned to assist the company clerk. The rest of the time I did routine patrol duty.

My favorite was working the information booth at the Main Gate. There I greeted visitors to the post, answered their questions, and gave them maps directing them to little Johnny's unit so they could attend his graduation or visit him.

I took basic and AIT (infantry) at Fort Lewis, Washington July-November 1969, and we were the LAST basic training company to use the M-14. Had the M-14 in basic, the M-16 in AIT. I liked the 14 much better for accuracy, but the 16 was much handier to carry around in the bush.

36 years. US Army, US Army Reserve, Army National Guard (Wisconsin, Texas, New Jersey) . E1 through O5. It was a hoot! I'd sign up again tomorrow but I don't think they'd be interested in a retired 73 year old. Infantry, Artillery, Armor, Cavalry, Aviation, Military Police, General Staff. Basic training, Ft Leonard Wood, NCO Academy, Ft Carson, OCS Ft Benning, Ranger School Ft Benning, Artillery School Ft Sill, Armor School Ft Knox, Aviation School Ft Rucker.Crewed 4.2 mortars, 105 howitzers, M48-60 tanks, so many different helicopters and airplanes I've lost count. (OH-13, OH-23, CH-34, UH-1A,B,C,M,D,H, OH6, L-19, Beaver, etc. Test bed aircraft that had special designations. Fired and qualified in almost every weapon system the Army had at the time. Command and General Staff College. I am thankful every day that I talked my Dad into letting me join when I was 17 years old. You know what? My best friend who joined the Air Force had it even better. Here we were. Just a couple of dumbassed kids out of the midwest and he was flying B-47s all over the world at the age of twenty. What a great country to be a part of.

Drafted in March, 1943, went to Durham, NC, to Camp Butner. Spent about 9 months there for specialised training on land mines, booby traps, all kinds of nasty explosives. Was on Tennessee maneuvers in March of 1944, after that, went to Camp Pickett, got furlough home, then off to New Jersey, for a month. And then onto a troop ship to England. Two weeks later, in July, went into France near St. Lo, and into action several days later. Was put into the 90th. Division, Infantry. From there, we walked all the way up past Paris, LeMans, Mayenne, all in France. Finally got to Metz in France, near german border.
Was captured by the Germans, but my captors all got killed or wounded by one of their anti-personnel mines that had been set up by their front man! I was hit bad, too.
I made my escape from that situation, but not without some problems. Our medics found me and my buddy next morning, and we got sent back to hospital. And that ended my army career, as they had to remove my left foot due to injuries from the land mine.
I'm still stomping along, and have no regrets. In fact, aside from my loss, i enjoyed my trip across the "Pond"!

Got the M-14 when I got to Ord. Yup brand spanking new. Kind of liked it shot well, didn't like the mag. sticking out and getting in the way.
Guess that's why I have a couple of M-1s and no M-14s now.
