I share Ray's view of 6v systems. They work fine and don't need any "more" care than a 12v system to opperate as they were designed to.

If going to 12v "fixes" a problem... you're only delaying the real problem and what ever made your 6v system "not work" will fail all together sometime in the future.

NOW - with all that said....

If your purpose for converting to 12v is for economy and improved performance at lower rpm... converting to 12v makes real sense. You can buy everything needed to upgrade a system from 6v to 12v for less that the cost of a new 6v regulator. You can usually pick up a 12v coil off something you have laying around (I have several) and a 12v battery and 12v lamps are not real expensive. The Delco 10SI is under $40 at most part stores and it bolts up to most mounts with little head scratching involved.

Once completed, you have a trouble free charging system that offers superior voltage regulation and assured output at much lower rpm than your generator ever thought possible.

It doesn't look right at a restoration show, but the workers in the field hardly ever notice.
