I recall about 1960, I was stationed at Atsugi, Japan. Honda hadn't started building cars yet, and imports were rare in the U.S. but most of the locat taxis in Japan were Toyotas and Datsuns.
There was a gravel road of about 4 miles from the base to the town of Yamato. The road was nonstop chuck holes about 6" deep. The cab drivers would put the pedal to the metal down that road, with the suspension bottoming every few seconds. We didn't call them "Kamikaze Cabs" for nothing. I said at the time any car that would survive that, had to be tough.
