I've run into some of those that don't really allow 2 way connections for playing and recording. Especially with no antenna input or tuner. Seems like I bought one of those 40 dollar specials from walmart a couple christmas's ago. Similar problem but the slide on the dvd quit working and ended up in the trash.
The player might have a set of rca inputs to the vcr either on the front or the back. Then your tv needs a rca output to plug into so you can record. Hard to get a tv with an output now though.
And then some vcr's aren't in stereo so you have to use a Y connector to get any sound.
Now they are made to feed satelite and cable boxes into them and out to the tv.
