Good morning my good friend: I have all ways let mother nature do her thing but I was never to far away,I all ways had 4 coral pannels handy, lock the cow in the barn very little light, lots straw for her,a calf puller,a haulter if broke to lead or not a good strong rope.to tie her up if needed. and the vet phone number right by the phone, and may be in your cell phone, and a few old towels if needed. But the least you bother the old cow the better off you are.It is ok to obseve from a distence. The biggest thing to watch for is prolapes in your cow, If you have done your home work you know what prolaps is, and what it means. I have done my share of calving. Now I buy in april and sell around DEC/JAN. I let them run all summer and no more cold nights. My Gramps would all ways tell me when calving, WHEN IN DOUGHT GIVE THE VET A SHOUT OR TAKE A CHANCE AND LOSE OUT. You can observe put you do not neeed to be in the pen with her.Sneak a peak thats all it takes. So till then my good friend be carful and stay safe because some old cows get realy mean at calving time. I hope I have helped you out. JR.Frye
