Each boy had a different mother. Episode on each wife. First was the daughter of a sailing captain when "Ben" was still sailing. She died when Adam was born and Ben went west. His second wife died during the trip west after "Hoss" was born. Last wife was from New Orleans that Ben met during a trip (to sell furs?)and gave birth to "Little Joe" and she died.
