Hi Peter, I have no data to support this but it has traditionally been thought that if an engine has been used for a long period of time with non-detergent oil, it was bad to change. Reason being that detergent oil would put things into suspension that were previously lying around in the engine. I have never heard the detergent oil attacks seals theory before. If it ever was true I suspect that modern oils would not do that...Al English
