When I had a place down on Lake Palestine, we had the same problem. I bought a few traps that look like these: Be sure and use a chain or cord and stake it so the gopher doesn't pull the trap down the hole in the event it doesn't die immediatly. When you have a dead one, the trick is to leave the dead gopher in the hole less the trap of course. Worked well for me. I reckon live gophers don't like working an existing hole with a dead body taking it up.
