Fire! through carb

My question's for a automotive/light truck engine. I'm working on a '73 Ford 390. Its been sitting about 5 years, and I just recently got the time to see if I can get it going. Problem is this. Almost everytime I crank it over to try to start, it backfires through the carb. Its very hard to start, but once running, runs great. But when trying to start, BOOM!, fire through the carb. Before I even started work on it, I completely drained the fuel system and rebuilt the carb, setting float and needles to factory specs. Also, the ignition timing is set to specs, and I don't hear any valves sticking. Any ideas? Thanks. (I'm still shaking from those 2 foot long flames!!!!) Oc:
