Also be sure to lube the generator and remember that it was 6 volt originally and most likely still is. So no 12 volt battery should come near it with out asking some more questions first.
Definitely remove the valve cover or you will most likely regret it.
In the future for your next endeavor I would recommend that you first remove the valve cover and then roll the engine over by hand after you have removed the spark plugs and soaked the piston rings with some ATF for a few days first.
And not to be nit picky but the 54 Ford is the NAA. Some guys will corner you on that. And no they are not the same, but darn close.
