Which lead does the alternator charge the batt thru? the A+ lead or the S lead (using the amp-gauge system) The alternator charges the battery through the large bat terminal on the alt rear, this terminal is hooked to one side of the amp guage. The A+ lead is the voltage sense wire for the regulator. The S lead is used to excite the alternator to start it charging. Also, is it alright to install an alt cutoff switch in the output lead? This system is a follows... the alt output lead goes thru an ammeter then to a cutoff relay. From the relay it goes to the continuously-hot solenoid terminal. Which lead does the battery get charged thru,and is this setup acceptable? By the way, the cutoff switch will seldom be open...but still, is that ok for the alternator or will it burn out with no load? (I heard voltage can "build up" in there and fry it, but I don't really believe it.) The alternator charges through the bat terminal on the alt rear to the amp guage to the battery through the continuously hot solenoid terminal. The cut off switch can burn out the alternator if it opens the circuit between the battery and the alternator I have seen them flash to 30-150 volts without a load and will heat up quickly. what is your reason for the alt cutoff switch? If you worry about an electrical short/fire when unattended I would install a battery disconnect switch. If you worry about the alternator discharging the battery, it will not draw any power when shut down as long as the I regulator terminal is switched off when the tractor is stopped.
