power booster cylinders?

Can anyone explain to me how the power assist booster cylinders work in a steering system? I'm currently working on the pictured Sno-Cat but have seen similar systems on tractors. There is linkage from the steering gearbox to the cylinder. One end of the cylinder is connected to the frame, the other to the steering mechanism. There is one hose from the pump to the cylinder and a return line from the cylinder to the tank. My question is how is this cylinder controlled. I see no visible valves. Is there something in the cylinder itself? If so how the heck does it work?
