Field Marshalls: basic newbie question

My folks "shooed" me off the farm when I left school 37 years ago (financially a wise strategy!), so my memories of tractors are growing weak! I stumbled on this wonderful web site by accident.

Is it true that Marshalls had to be started with a shotgun shell? If so, was it a Marshall product or would your regular 12-bores do it?

Was the Marshall single-cylinder a two-stroke engine or a petrol 4-stroke, or a diesel??
