Honestly....this is really a no-brainer.
Just a little reasoning will tell you that such a rig is going to like fuel. It"s big, it"s heavy and has a whole herd of horses to feed...and that requires lots of hay.
Folks will climb on their stump and tell you how good their diesel truck is on fuel and how powerful they are. Hands down, pulling a load...the diesel will run off and hide from a gasser. That"s a no brainer as well..as in, DUH!
But, that diesel is $5000-$8000 extra up front (new) and that amount of money will buy a lot of gasoline, even at $2.75 a gallon. Unless you haul heavy loads on a daily basis, you"d be a long time retrieving your up front investment in fuel savings. Furthermore, that diesel requires 2 large batteries at replacement time. It also requires high dollar fuel filters and oil changes are at least twice what a gasser costs, and usually more. Maintenance costs on a diesel vehicle is a high dollar proposition across the board.
So, sit down and do the math.
If your uses require a stout tow vehicle on a day to day basis...the diesel is probably a good investment....but to get 5-7 more mpg as a daily driver....you"ll spend/invest more than the fuel savings are worth.
Bottom line is: it costs a lot to operate a full size 4x4 pick up truck...period. If you need one..or just want one...be prepared to bear the operating costs..they are going to be high.
