thinking of closing a deal on a 09 ram 2500 reg cab 4x4 hemi, can't find much info on mileage, anyone have real knowledge back with expearance?

I haven't heard of anybody getting good mileage with a gas Ram..I had a '97 with a 5.2 , barely got 11 mpg downhill with a tailwind...I've had it with the newer trucks ...Over accessoried junk..electrical nightmares , emissions coming out the ying-yang....I'll stick with my underpowered military M-1008..I haven't had any problems with the ABS brakes , emission controls , stereo , or AC blowing warm air...

ya don't buy a truck equipped like that for economy...So get ready to shell out at the pump. low double digits if you ARE LUCKY.... If you want reliability , economy , simplicity , power , and the thrill of mile after mile with a smile , buy something like my 95 Cummins 5 Speed , positive traction rearend , 20 mpg , and will go thru nearly any place a 4 wheel drive will .. My 2 cents

A 2 wheel drive diesel won't go anywhere without some weight in the back because the engine is so heavy. Dave

'96 ram 2500 4x4 extended cab 360 gas gets 12-13 I would be surprised if the newer ones got any better.

Honestly....this is really a no-brainer.

Just a little reasoning will tell you that such a rig is going to like fuel. It"s big, it"s heavy and has a whole herd of horses to feed...and that requires lots of hay.

Folks will climb on their stump and tell you how good their diesel truck is on fuel and how powerful they are. Hands down, pulling a load...the diesel will run off and hide from a gasser. That"s a no brainer as well..as in, DUH!

But, that diesel is $5000-$8000 extra up front (new) and that amount of money will buy a lot of gasoline, even at $2.75 a gallon. Unless you haul heavy loads on a daily basis, you"d be a long time retrieving your up front investment in fuel savings. Furthermore, that diesel requires 2 large batteries at replacement time. It also requires high dollar fuel filters and oil changes are at least twice what a gasser costs, and usually more. Maintenance costs on a diesel vehicle is a high dollar proposition across the board.

So, sit down and do the math.

If your uses require a stout tow vehicle on a day to day basis...the diesel is probably a good investment....but to get 5-7 more mpg as a daily driver....you"ll spend/invest more than the fuel savings are worth.

Bottom line is: it costs a lot to operate a full size 4x4 pick up truck...period. If you need one..or just want one...be prepared to bear the operating costs..they are going to be high.

, and thank all that responded to my guestion, bought my frist 3/4t 4x4 dodge 360 in 87, esperance at the best 10-5mpg but fuel wasn't 3.00, 2nd was a 96, would do the 13-11 if you baby, but not uncomon for me too pull trailer over 6 ton if I pushed the 87 hard lest than the 5, the 96 lest than 7, but the power was there, bought a Desiel in 04, 17-11 was better, desiel was considerbly cheaper then, no one hardly stocked the larger gas trucks in my area, I wiil agree with mark about the present ecommic of the desiel-gas debate. if I was going down the interstate 50k miles per year desiel might be worth the extra. I was having a hard time getting milage data from the dealer, but was sure It had improved since 96, I do thank oldoloverlover and marlowe for answsering my question from that real experance. Wishing a hap,py and profitable new year.
