I agree there should be a long moratorium on rail mergers. More importantly, not one more foot of rail line abandonment should be tolerated. This is unfortunately something that our government NEEDS to take a hand in, much as I am usually opposed to government meddeling. These railroads do not want to haul less than 100 car unit trains on double tracked main lines (coal) and have willingly abandoned single boxcar shipping to trucks. Truckers do a great job, but rails are needed too. Farming communities should howl with rage the next time these railroads try to pull out and quit service.
