rod bearings

I am restoring a 15-30 McCormick Deering but have a small problem. The crank has recently been reground. The shim type bearings for the rods when tightened to get proper clearance become extremely egg shaped. when I have 4 thousandths thrust surface clearance I get at least 60 thousandth side clearance. The problem is this doesn't leave much surface for the bearing to ride on. Any ideas? The crank is ground at 2.84 and the bearings are new old stock IH parts of standard tolerances.
