Avery Rear End and Tranny Oil - 30 weight engine oil ???

I asked this question on the orphans and oddballs forum quite a while ago and the best answer I got wasn't really what I was after. Anyways, the owners manual for my Avery model A specifies (for the transmission and differential) 60 weight engine oil in the summer, 40 weight in the spring and fall, and 30 weight in the winter. Now, how come Avery was using engine oil when everyone else seemed to specify like 80 or 90 weight tranny oil? Should a guy use tranny oil? Could a guy use engine oil in another old tractor from the 40's? Anyone out there know why this might have been?
