The latest info from an oil specs site says do not use #90 GL5 in transmissions. The additives attack white and yellow metal parts and the EP additives make the oil too slippery for the syncro blocker rings to hold properly. Most manual transmissions specify non detergent #50 motor oil which has the same viscosity as #90 gear oil. Have seen this all the way fron a light duty car 3 speed to a semi 15 speed. 25 years ago when I was into dirt track stock car racing we used #50 aero aircraft engine oil in the engine, transmission and hypoid rear axle and never had a transmission or rearend failure, even though this stuff was under much heavier load than it would see in any normal on road use.
