I was a kid when I first saw that movie. I then started bugging my dad to let me buy my first car (to pull apart and ruin). I learned a lot of mechanics the hard way.
So, thanks to influence from Robert Mitchum, I bought a 1955 Ford with a 292 V8 for $50. Ran perfect, but I couldn't wait to tear it all apart "soup it up." I spent every penny I could earn for awhile and bought a Isky cam, tri-power intake manifold and carb setup, headers, etc. But, I pulled the heads off, water got into the engine and bascially ruined it. It never ran again. First of many perfectly good cars that I took apart and ruined.
After my first half-dozen failures, I actually started getting a few running.
