I think it is a classic Catch 22, US consumers don't buy diesel cars because the car makers don't sell them (save VW, more later), and the car makers do not sell them because consumers don't buy them. The VW diesel is a great car but having to change the timming belt and all those pullies every 40 K to the tune of $800 or so gets old and negates any savings in fuel economey, plus the special oil it takes is mostly a dealer only thing, and VW parts are pricy. This last summer I put a rebuilt alternator in a diesel Jetta, it cost $371. This summer I also had to replace the alternator on my 1030 Case. It has been converted from a generator to a GM AC Delco alternator. NAPA sold me one for $42. My point is you are not going to save any money buying a VW diesel, unless you run on red fuel.
