I ran a single hot wire around the pasture fence at our place in Dallas. Ran it up high, about 48 in. up. The horses had been rubbing on the fence so hard they were pushing the posts out.
The charger was a Parmak plug in type capable of powering 10 miles of fence. The fence around the pasture was maybe a half mile of single wire, so the wire had lots of zap.
I put handles at the gate to the back yard, but it was easier just to duck. I have long hair and I use barrettes to clip it back. You guessed it, one day I didn't duck far enough and the metal barrette touched the wire. I got zinged real good. Took my breath away and left an odd taste in my mouth.
