You still have to answer to the courts as far as charges related to whatever you did wrong that caused the accident. The difference is that your insurance company covers your losses (medical, death benefit, loss of wages, etc., some residual liability.) Coverage for your car, (collision, comprehensive), towing, rental, uninsured motorist all are optional at extra cost. What it does is keeps every piddling accident out of the court system, as to who is at fault, and thus should have to pay the other guy. That way, hospitals, and other bills get paid fairly promptly. Overall, it works fairly well, if they"d only get some of the quirks out of it.
