You can do it "Static" not running, or with a timing light..
The marks usually are hard to see and jump around some with a timing light, and the timing marks can be hard to see if you have not high-lighted them well.. TDC and the advanced degree numbers need to be easily seen.. Other way is to take the plugs out..at least the Flywheel-side plug. roll the engine FORWARD direction until the TDC mark centers in the inspection hole at the forward top of the flywheel cover.. put a sparkplug in the flywheel-side sparkplug Wire and lead it thru to the Right side of the tractor, so you can see if a spark occurs (be sure it grounds, so a spark will happen..!!) Loosen the distributor, turn ON the ignition and slowly rotate the distributor in a Forward direction (you may need to rotate it backwards first) until you Get a Spark..STOP turning exactly at the point you see the spark.. Don't forget to turn off the ignition!!) Tighten the Dist down and put the plug back in and it should be ready to go... Remember, always rotate in a Forward direction to always have any gear-lash taken up that would throw the timing off.. Ron..
