Thanks for the suggestions Rod. I'm going after the shop manual tomorrow and then I'll have it to look at when I start tearing into the tractor. A friend said he remembered my son tighting a bolt below the shift lever. Once I get the plate off that's the first thing I'm going to check, then I'll check the linkage as you suggested.
