What drove many "Mom & Pop" stores out of business was a combination of Gov't regulation and Corporate greed. My brother was an owner operator of a Texaco service station. Since his volume sales were low his distributor prices were higher-controled by TEXACO. He could buy bulk gas from the Farm Service man cheaper than from the Distributor. Gov't regulation on underground tanks and insurance. All those plus people don't like to pay for mechanic work. He just closed it up and went to work for some one else.
