OT: Rant - Casey's General Stores

OK: Maybe it's just me in central Illinois, but is anyone else getting tired of the Casey stores?
Thought this was a chain out of Iowa but the way they're going now - might as well be a Wal Mart!
Lack of service, prices are above average, gas prices are higher and NO body knows how to park at one of these "convenient stores" any more.

Just my 0.02 observations.

Jim

I'm from Iowa, where Casey's is headquartered. I give them my business here, because the competition is a roach motel. The prices are pretty much the same as everyone else locally, and the bathroom doesn't give me the willies.

Round here some are nice , some are not. I prebuy all my gas at a local business so I dont have to stop there for gas. They have great pizza. From what I see its all in the manager. Also what part of town. One local one in St cloud you cant ever go in there with out feeling like your at a circus with the freaks that work there and then their buddies hang out there. Another one seems to be a fairy hangout. There is one in Sartell that seems to have their management on top of things. Just like super america"s, they have their winners and ltheir losers

Almost every small town around us has one. I usually don't stop at them as I get my fuel at more conveniently located outlets.

As to the price of stuff inside, well, I've started doing something different in the last year. I only buy fuel at convenience stores. I don't buy stuff inside. If I need something, I go to a regular store. In looking at my spending, I've saved a bundle of cash since doing this.

The worst thing to happen to the convenience store industry is the debit card and "pay at the pump." No one goes inside the store to buy soda, munchies, candy, etc, and the margin on gas is limited. They, like every other convenience store, have had to get creative.

I've noticed on their website that you can buy advertising on top of their pumps, etc. How many places tell you this right on their websites?

Personally, I don't stop at them very often. They are not really local to me.

They make an awesome raspberry danish type breakfast treat! :)

I live about one mile (as the crow flies) from the headquarters. One of my previous employers was one of the first franchise Caseys in Iowa. He never bought the gas from the corporate office as they charge the same whether the store was close to headquarters or not.
Now the corporate owns all of the stores and charges what they want at different locations but "usually" the tankers still come from the same depot.
Also was told that they only make a penny or two from gas but inside sales in small towns was HUGE. Beer and cigarettes are always needed in small towns.
I still go to them but also go to the competitors just as much.

Yep - Up to $4 dollars a gallon in an instant at that time as we watched - first to raise!
Kinda shame though that they ran most other people out (with their low price tactics)

You are right Case e - but what has happened to our local "Mom and Pop" stores because of the Casey's? - WalMart Supercenter?

I go to Casey's all the time.

Here in Nebraska, their prices on gasoline are usually a few cents per gallon less than the competition. I spend a lot of time on the road on the job, almost every small town has one, the chow is good and I know I can trust it. I can eat their food and know I won't get a gut ache ten miles down the road.

Like someone else said, the local manager makes the difference. I noticed one particular store never had any food ready except pizza. The clerk said they never had call for anything else. I emailed Corporate, identified the store, described the problem, and asked how they could sell what they didn't have out.

The next time I stopped at that store at mealtime, they had the usual variety and people were buying it.

One of our local stores that has booths also has a coffee group of mostly elderly farmers that meets there. They call themselves the "CAVE" group. (Citizens Against Virtually Everything).

Contrary to other posts, Casey's is my stop of choice, particularly when I'm on the road.

Here in NY we have a new truck stop called Pilot Travel Centers, good gasoline price, but diesel is 14 cents higher than other stations. They have a Dunkin Dounuts, and Subway in there. J

I've got to agree that raspberry danish is great. The local Casey's doesn't carry non-ethanol gas any more, so required to drive a little distance to get it for the small engines or have FS deliver some when they bring the diesel. Unfortunately have storage for only about 50 gallons and the "new" Vermeer wood chipper uses that up pretty quick. Casey's gets all my on-road gas business.

As convenience stores go, I kind of like them. Better than average hot food. Wife and I like their pizza. Seems like they could make better use of their store space and offer more items.

I live about 5 miles as the crow flies from Corporate office. Went to school with one of the Lamberties. They're a good operation-way better than Kum&Go. Their Pizzas are better than the locals and more fairly priced, too. They don't charge extra when using a credit card like some of the truck stops do. On trips west, we always stop at Kearney, Nebraska to fill up and Caseys always been the lowest price place on the strip.

Was glad to see Casey's come to our small town where the only three gas vendors were always 10-20 cents a gallon higher than neighboring towns. The day Casey's opened that crap stopped and now all three (one has closed) amazingly have their gas all priced the same and it's in line with other nearby towns.

We currently have four of them in town and city council thankfully just turned them down for a newer and fifth staion an north edge of town. their goal is to be the first station you come to as you enter town. i drive by them as fast as possible and still go to the ma and pa station. For I too am a small business and know what we are up against.

Would you by chance be in Northwest Indiana?
And if you are, where is the station with
ethanol free gas?
I'd go a couple counties away to get some.
Thanks

I will give my 2 cents worth on both sides of the issue.

As a Rural Mail Carrier, I much prefer to buy my gasoline at our local Sinclair station. Sinclair claims to be made from USA supplied crude oil. I can tell a little better MPG from the Sinclair, usually the same price but sometimes a penny higher.

OK, so why not buy more from Casey's? For one thing, they will jump the price by a dime or so for no reason, just to see if it will stick. Sinclair will jump price a couple hours later as they have limited fuel supply. As soon as Sinclair runs out of gas Casey's will drop back down. Used to have three gas stations in town, Casey's was successful killing the independent with this tactic.

On the plus side, they do have PayAtThePump. Just swipe the card, and get back on the road.

Our local Casey's does have non alcohol gas, as needed by Stihl and other small engines. I use gasohol in all I can, but boat, airplane, and most small engines can't use it. DOUG

When it is called a convenience store you will pay extra for the convenience.

I can't see how they could be held responsible for the way people park.
Running about 50/50 at the moment so a lot are satisfied, maybe have a look at the "me'.

I prefer Casey's. Their coffee is better than anyone elses. Their gas is cheaper than anyone else. They sell their 89 octane 10% ethanol at the cheapest price. Their 87 octane regular gas costs more. All the other stations match their 87 octane regular gas price to Casey's low price on the ethanol. Then they call their 89 octane 10% ethanol a midgrade gas and sell it for a dime more per gallon than Caseys. Since I buy based upon octane and prefer the 89 ethonal, Casey's is always a dime cheaper than the Kwik shops and other stores.

What do you care?I'd assume if you don't like them you don't frequent the place.
Or is it like here a new Super Walmart opened up about 10 miles from me and several of the people that raised the most Heck about it before it was built have been going every day.

I don't buy gas from them because when you tally it up, they are higher than the competitors.

Currently, the area gas stations of BP, Shell and TropArtic have their 87 octane for $2.59. Caseys has their 87 octane for $2.65.

The area gas stations of BP, Shell and TropArtic have their 89 octane for $2.65. Caseys has their 89 octane for (so they can price match the other stations) $2.59. Except their 89 octane gas has 10% alcohol where the other stations do not. They should be selling this gas for a lot cheaper than any of the others.

As far as being a convenience store, if I want a drink or snack, I'll go in and buy something, but they are just like all other convenience stores, high priced.

When I had my rural FedEx Home Delivery route, they were a sight for sore eyes! There were so few places to stop it was crazy. I figured if I used their bathroom, I'd buy something. Worked out good for me! Seemed I could always find something worth eating in a Caseys. Greg

What drove many "Mom & Pop" stores out of business was a combination of Gov't regulation and Corporate greed. My brother was an owner operator of a Texaco service station. Since his volume sales were low his distributor prices were higher-controled by TEXACO. He could buy bulk gas from the Farm Service man cheaper than from the Distributor. Gov't regulation on underground tanks and insurance. All those plus people don't like to pay for mechanic work. He just closed it up and went to work for some one else.

I don't have a problem with them. Their gas is as low or lower than the competitions and they are convinent. I almost never go inside but, if any station doesn't have pay at the pump I almost always drive on.
They have a lot of blank people working inside but, most all of them do.
As far as their pricing goes they bid for fuel from the majors refiners and pump prices are based on their need to remain profitable. If you don't like them don't shop there. There are many places I won't shop for various reasons of my own.

No, southwest Illinois. Best way to find ethanol free gas is to catch the bulk delivery driver at the station and ask him where he delivers it.
