One of the best trips we took as a family was when we headed west to Casper, Wy. From there we took back roads to Bryce Canyon with stops at the Flaming Gorge, and the dinosaur site near Vernal, Utah. Or I think that was where it was near anyway. What a great spot Bryce Canyon was to see. From there we went to the north side of the Grand Canyon. Again, it was beautiful scenery. We had been to the south rim before but the north rim was much better. Very few tourists and the views are just as good. Also be sure and take in the lodge there. On the way back we took mostly interstate going through Colorado. Really nice scenery along I-70 through the mountains.
