Okay just winterized the camper for the winter and was having thoughts of where to go next year. Have 7 days next summer, 4 kids and a motor home. Any ideas? I live in western IA and have been to Minn. and Colorada already.

Have you ever been to the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan?

Wonderful museum and complex. Not about cars but there are a few.

Personally I like it better than the Smithsonian.

Come see Wisconsins "East Coast" along the lovely shores of Lake Michigan. Go up to Door County, see "Deaths Door" - the crossing to Washington Island. Drive up and around the top of the Lake, see Michigan from top to bottom and then down to Illinois where you could check out the Shed Aquarium, Field Musuem, Museum of Science and Industry, etc. Could probably make a nice round trip out of it.

From where I am (Manitowoc) I would probably take our ferry across and then head to Connecticut, Rhode Island, etc.

Good luck planning!
Bill

Almost forgot, right here in Manitowoc - Wisconsin Maritime Museum complete with our own WW2 submarine and don't forget to have ice cream at Cedarcrest Dairy next to a 15 ft tall Geurnsey Dairy cow!

We took our 3 kids and a Motorhome to Utah and Arizona years ago and it was the trip of a lifetime....

MUST SEE:

Bryce Canyon Natl Park, I actually liked it as much or more then the Grand Canyon..

Zion Natl Park, a short distance from Bryce

Mounument Valley on the way to Grand Canyon, its where all those old John Ford directed John Wayne Westerns were filmed, its on the way to the FOUR CORNERS

THE GRAND CANYON

I tell peopel they havent lived until theyve seen Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon......If theres not enough time or its too far, then just take in Bryce and Zion or you could swing by Arches also in Utah

Have a great trip we sure did, were taking the RV next sumemr to Crater Lake and Glacier then swing by Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, kids are raised now and what I would give for those old family RV trips again, but thats just the cycle of life.......

I'd second the grand canyon and jellystone. At jellystone, the rv park and campgrounds usually need reservations months in advance. It is easy to spend 4 days there and go to a different section of the park each day. Stop in Jackson hole for a day on the way or way back. If you and the kids are up to it, hike the grand canyon. We did it once. You need to make reservations for the ranch at the bottom months in advance. Except don't do what I did. We drove through monument valley on the way there and I stopped at one place and bought a navajo taco from a parking lot vendor. I hiked out of the grand canyon with diarrhea.

All great places above but I also enjoyed the Black Hills. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse monument, Custer State park, Wall Drug. Not to mention the beauty of the Black Hills themselves.

One of the best trips we took as a family was when we headed west to Casper, Wy. From there we took back roads to Bryce Canyon with stops at the Flaming Gorge, and the dinosaur site near Vernal, Utah. Or I think that was where it was near anyway. What a great spot Bryce Canyon was to see. From there we went to the north side of the Grand Canyon. Again, it was beautiful scenery. We had been to the south rim before but the north rim was much better. Very few tourists and the views are just as good. Also be sure and take in the lodge there. On the way back we took mostly interstate going through Colorado. Really nice scenery along I-70 through the mountains.

Come up & see me in the Yukon. I'll show you around this part of the country. We'll treat you to some Moose steaks, Red salmon, Caribou & a cold beer. If you have time after that go on up to Alaska. What part of W Iowa are you from. I'm from Minden Iowa when I'm not here in the Yukon. Gerald McCool

National Scenic Riverways. Missouri Ozarks.

Try Emminence Missouri. Lots of caves, mills, rivers to float, public and private campgrounds, antique stores, etc.. Jacks Fork river, Current river, Meramac or Huzzah rivers.

If you can avoid major holidays, and if you want to float, do it in the middle of the week.

Another neat place is Van Buren Mo.

Most of the float trip vendors will take you upstream, then you can float down. Full day floats, half day, two day, whatever. Van Buren has a nice hotel right on the water. Gravel bars to relax on, kids can swim, might catch a fish. Beautiful scenery.

The Black Hills, lots to see and do. Just don't go during the 4th of July weekend like we did. Too crowded.

John T, our kids are also raised up and gone but we have some good memories of doing that. When we first started camping we went out to the Black hills in a 1961 Ford 3/4 ton with a topper. We had three kids and in order to accommodate sleeping I made a plywood shelf on the top of the pickup box so the kids could sleep there while we were below them in the bed of the pickup. We had to move everything from the back into the cab for the night. Anyway at a campground at Chamberlain SD, it was just getting dark and we had the end gate down and were laying there looking out and I said to my wife, boy have we got it made.) Things sure have changed.

John T : I've waited a lifetime to see Monument Valley. Can't remember when the "Duke" wasn't a major influence in my life. Any insight or tips on planning a driving trip there ? Wasn't there a railroad trip from Chicago going there at one time?
This summer or next, we'll make it there.

I think we actually were there twice. Its located on highway 163 from Southeast Utah to Northeast Arizona and other then Monument Valley, theres really not much else to see or do or stay or anything along the route BUT I STILL CONSIDER IT A MUST SEE. You will recognize EXACTLY those big rock towers where the westerns were filmed. We wear at the Four Corners first n then headed east on 160 to 41 N to 262 to 163 then southwest to monument valley. The thing is if youre in that area Grand Canyon and Bryce arent all that far butttttttttt plan wayyyyyyy ahead n get reservations.

I think on Travel Channel I saw some American Orient Express train trips in tee area but they are expensive. The freedom and less expensive RV trip is how we had to go when raising 3 kids.

We raised 3 kids with RV travel n camping and it was the best most memorable experience one could have. Now they have jobs n spread out n getting kids of their own but I dont see them doing the same with their families which really makes me sad, I guess we will have to take the grandkids on trips??

Get on the net and research n plan it...

Have a safe trip

Fun discussion,,,,,,Our first trip when first married was in a wooden home made truck topper on back of a 60's something Ford F 250 4 x 4 with me n the new first wife n the dog. We went to Florida in February to tow my uncles boat back home. Then we had the kids and slowly graduated as we could afford it to bigger real truck campers then I was into the Winnebagos Class A's in late 70's n 80's then got into Class C's of which we still use today.

What a great way to family travel and vacation, the best memories of our lives now, we have some old films n VHS and videos and pics which I need to get onto DVD now so teh kids can show thier kids n grandkids of how life used to be..

Yes Ive been there- as a kid my folks took us on a 3 week trip to N + S Dakota Wyoming on out to Washington then down to California and back, all in a 1978 ford with a topper. No airconditioning, crowded, a cooler full of sandwich stuff, jug of iced tea, pancakes on the coleman stove on the tailgate for breakfast but we had the time of our life on our "farmer vacation" as we call it! Saw the giant redwoods the ocean, grand tetons yellowstone fishermans warf and probably a lot of other great places that I was a little to young to fully appreciate but a great time and great memories! Wish the old man was around to take along with my family this time.

Though about this too, thought too long, my wifes uncle worked at the Milton Hersey school and we could have done everything for next to nothing, took too much time planning and he was called back to Iraq. Lesson learned- grab a great oppertunity when is is presented to you!

Would love to see that part of the world! I am from near Denison but I actually lived just south of Shelby about 12 years ago. (just up the road from Carstens Farmstead) Do you ever make it to that show?

Custer state park, SD. Go the week BEFORE labor day and you'll have it all to yourself. Nice facilities in the park and lots to see.Did this this year and was truly amazed with the park. Excellant fishing, and was truly awed by Mt. Rushmore.

My son would be in Heaven! He is the BIGGEST 11 year old John Wayne fan ever! Not to mention his dad grew up every sunday afternoon listening to a Duke movie!

Have been to Custer with the two oldest kids a LONG time ago. Spent the whole day there, watched the bissen and had a great day. This was our last day and I didnt want to drive back the interstate so I went out the south gate and though I would go south and catch HWY 20 in Ne. Drove for a while on a nice paved road then is turned to gravel some where on the reservation. Some pretty county in places, no other cars and an abandon home site or to. Did alot of praying that the old van with a TON of miles was gonna make it! Found the hwy again and got into Whiteclay, found the American flag flying upside down! (this was when there was alot of dispute about selling liquor on the resorvation) Sure enough I have both the kids tell me they HAVE to go potty! NOT HERE YOU DONT! Was glad to find HWY 20!

There are nice campgrounds all the way up the chain of dams on the Missouri River up through South Dakota.

Seriously, if you can swing it, take a few more days even if you have to go without a couple days' pay. Those kids are only young once and time flies by. A trip out to Colorado, north through Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons, in the south entrance to Yellowstone, a couple days in the park, then out the east entrance to Casper, Wyoming and home from there.

Find a way to do it.

Case-e

1) If you get out this far- to the Grand Canyon, you can take a guided mule trip down and up. North rim is the best side as its not as crowded.

2) Yellowstone is great! I'd go after or before the tourists.

3) You can go and visit "the king of obsolete" (google his website) in Central Canada.

4) Michigan would be good..... they could use your money......sl

5) Branson, Mo.

the bad lands and south dakota Lead, Deadwood,Mount Rushmore& the Rushmore caves tour the homestake gold mine[I tink thats the name} take a drive down the Needles highway lots of good stuff there

You have plenty of time to google tourism bureau"s in each state you are considering- they love to send their literature.

Black hills are great. My wife is from NW Wisconsin and that is pretty country too in the Blue Hills area. I'm in NE Nebraska so anywhere with alot of trees is scenic, BUT HWY 2 through Nebraska from west of Lincoln up to the NW corner is said to be excellent too. I guess pick a direction and drive, probably lots to see everywhere.

Notice that a lot of untractor related posts are on here but just the ones whiners don't like seem to disappear.

I had too laugh again. We went there when I was 6 or 7. Dads off fish'n and Mom was getting ready too cook dinner.

I came back too camp(tent) and grabbed a meat cleaver and started off. Mom asked me where I was going and I said "too get meat for dinner". Mom sent sis with me too watch me.

I threw the cleaver then started running and picked up my game, a nice big cotton tail. I'd cut the head completely off.

So here we go back too camp with me snickering all the way while carrying my prize by the hind legs.

Dad shows up with no fish, so I said well I didn't come home empty handed as I held up my rabbit. Mom & Dad were asstonished with my kill. Of course I'm laughing hard now. My sis confirms my kill and tells all about it. Me I'm still laughing.

Dad inspects my rabbit and gets this really odd look upon his face then says "this rabbit isn't freshly killed" of course sister jumps in and again tells them how she saw me kill my rabbit, so it has to be fresh.

By now I'm really laughing hard as I had spotted the dead rabbit while walking back to camp the first time and faked the kill.

Geezs we had a good laugh on that one!

Thanks for the memories!!!
