Hobbs hour meter

I got a good Hobbs hour meter from the junkyard today, the type that's like a rotary clock. I hooked it up to our battery charger, 6 volts, to see if it would work. It does when I hit it, but just for a second or two. It there a way to open it and oil it, ect?
