The earlier post on a Chevy truck question got lots of good answers. So I decided to try a question of mine.
I have a 49 Chevy 3/4 ton with a 54 235 6 cyl engine (2nd engine) and I've been trying to get the water drain plug out of the block. When I originally tried to open it to drain the block, nothing came out (years of crud inside I suppose) and in several attempts to get the entire plug out, I've mostly destroyed the plug. Finally took an angle drill and started drilling in from the center of the plug. Started with a small bit and worked up. The idea was that with the center of the plug drilled out, I could sort of mash the outer portion down enough to break it loose from the block threads. When I got to a 1/4 inch bit, I broke off a piece of the bit in the plug. I'm not sure what to try next. I've heard of electrical discharge machining, but understand it's VERY expensive. The engine in still in the truck chassis. I'll probably need to pull the engine and have a machine shop go after it. Any ideas from you mechanics?
