Chevy truck mechanic question

The earlier post on a Chevy truck question got lots of good answers. So I decided to try a question of mine.

I have a 49 Chevy 3/4 ton with a 54 235 6 cyl engine (2nd engine) and I've been trying to get the water drain plug out of the block. When I originally tried to open it to drain the block, nothing came out (years of crud inside I suppose) and in several attempts to get the entire plug out, I've mostly destroyed the plug. Finally took an angle drill and started drilling in from the center of the plug. Started with a small bit and worked up. The idea was that with the center of the plug drilled out, I could sort of mash the outer portion down enough to break it loose from the block threads. When I got to a 1/4 inch bit, I broke off a piece of the bit in the plug. I'm not sure what to try next. I've heard of electrical discharge machining, but understand it's VERY expensive. The engine in still in the truck chassis. I'll probably need to pull the engine and have a machine shop go after it. Any ideas from you mechanics?

you could try a air hammer on the drill bit to try to brake it. best bet is to use a diegrander with a carbite bit or drumel tool. take your time. david

I'm guessing it is still under the hood right?? If it is then how I would do it would not work or would not be easy to do. If out of the truck I would weld a nut on to it then use that to un-screw what is left. Oh by the way do you need any body parts?? I have a 5 window cab and a few other front end parts laying around. My son has a 1951-1/2 ton with the 216 engine in it

You should have used heat in the first place; but it's a little late now. If there's anything left that you can grab with a Vise Grip, I would heat it up with an acetylene brazing tip and try to unscrew it hot.

I have been able to grind out a broken drill bit using a die grinder with a carbide burr.

You might try needle nose pliers and see if you can get that broke drill bit piece out and try a bigger bit.If you can get the ends of the needle nose jammed in the flat spots on the drill bit and try to turn it backwards maybe it will come out.

If the drill broke as it was breaking through the plug you may be able to drive it into the water jacket with a punch. If the plug is big enough can you drill some 1/8" holes around it, then crush it? If you get the drill out that is a long way to getting the plug out. With a 1/4" hole in it saw out towards the threads with a ground down hacksaw blade, or sawzall or some such. Once you have sawed all but the threads you can collapse it. You may need to saw in two places. Try not to cut into the threads much as it will make it moe difficult to seal when you put a new plug in.
