First of all, there are no longer any 2-place "ultralight" aircraft. If a two-place ultralight did not get certificated as a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) by December 31, 2008, it is no longer legal to fly it.
So what you're looking for is an LSA. LSAs do require that you get a Sport Pilot license, but it's much easier and cheaper to get a Sport Pilot license than a Private Pilot license. The LSA aircaft tend to be much more capable than ultralights. An LSA can be up to 1320 lbs gross, while ultralights can't be over 254 lbs empty.
The best source of information is the Experimental Aircraft Association. Here's a link to their Sport Pilot site.
If you're seriously interested in LSAs, you should join the EAA and attend the EAA Airventure airshow in Oshkosh next July. There will be dozens of LSAs on display.
