Can anyone tell me where I can purchase an ultralight plane that will seat up to two people.
thanks,
John

Unless they've changed the rules since I had one, it isn't an ultralight if it seats two people. They were making a new designation for them back then (maybe 18-20 years ago?) where you wouldn't need a full up pilot license to fly a two seater, but you would need some sort of limited FAA issued license. For a single seat ultralight, there was no requirement for a license, but you were still bound by FAA regs for operation.

Try Titan aircraft. Father-in-law has one (2 seater one behind the other) with 100+ HP Rotax engine. Will cruise about 100mph can go 115-120 for short durations. He didn't need a special license for the plane but the higher HP engine requires a regular license. He built his from a kit from Titan so he could be his own air-frame mechanic.

Sounds like fun ,, BECAUSE I KNOW IT IS FUN ....Be careful on marginal weather days , Backpack flyer friend of mine says it BEST ,, It is far better to be on the ground and wish you were in the air , THAN TO BE IN THE AIR AND WISH YOU WERE ON THE GROUND ..Same Holds true with a load going ocver a steep hill .. It is far better to be in Low gear and realize you could a geared higher , THAN TO be in HI AND WISH You HAD GEARED DOWN , AND NOW IT IS TOO LATE ... Low gear and Caution for the wind just takes a few extra Hail Marys longer

While waiting for my wife at the supermarket, I
was brousing the huge magazine section, and
there were several magazines on aircraft, so
some are probably full of ads for what you want.

You might try this. Go to www.Tbss.us go to
Club Classifieds on the left of the page. Then go to the botom of that page. Don Thomasson, a
friend of mine is the dealer for this really neat
two place L.S.A. You can download the brochure for both models of Aircraft.

Here is something with a quick build kit.
http://www.preceptoraircraft.com/stolking.html

This improved Piper Cub "Stol King" allows take off and landings from the average home yard or driveway. The cabin is larger than the average highschool locker as well.
Go for a fourstroke Rotax or Lycomming. The twostrokes cost huge in fuel and short intervals between major overhauls.Even a fourstroke Continental has low hours between majors.

A single seater is a waste of time since payload and range is so limited.
A two seater has a enough weight capacity to carry one person, a full load of fuel and a couple bags of luggage.

First of all, there are no longer any 2-place "ultralight" aircraft. If a two-place ultralight did not get certificated as a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) by December 31, 2008, it is no longer legal to fly it.

So what you're looking for is an LSA. LSAs do require that you get a Sport Pilot license, but it's much easier and cheaper to get a Sport Pilot license than a Private Pilot license. The LSA aircaft tend to be much more capable than ultralights. An LSA can be up to 1320 lbs gross, while ultralights can't be over 254 lbs empty.

The best source of information is the Experimental Aircraft Association. Here's a link to their Sport Pilot site.

If you're seriously interested in LSAs, you should join the EAA and attend the EAA Airventure airshow in Oshkosh next July. There will be dozens of LSAs on display.

They don't come up too often at estate sales, because they are usually destroyed in the incident that led to the sale.
