I bought a pellet stove several years ago and put it in front of the fireplace and covered over the fireplace opening with asbestos board (yep, still got some of that stuff) and cut a 4 inch round hole in the board. The stove pipe ran about 10 inches through the board and just vented horizontally into the blocked off fireplace. It had very good draw and there were no problems with such a hookup. I think I would recommend that the fireplace be well closed off in order to have such a setup. I suppose nowadays one would have to be concerned whether or not the fire insurance would cover such a setup...but it sure was cozy all winter! Cal
