you can stretch the 4x3 signals and yes they will be wider... or you can go to a source that broadcast in hd and 16x9.. then you will see a full picture with correct demensions... dish tv is all digital and a very good price point for rural areas and you can get it with the hd package. catv were availible is part digital and somewhat noisy but has lots of hd content. if close to a city you can get digital tv over the air signal but not if far away. also if your in a area that offers fios or uverse, you can get a perfect signal over all digital networks like dish and direct tv.
