High Def TV Disappointment

Got a 46 in HD TV. The picture doesn't fill the screen. Five or six inches of blank on each side. If I try to adjust to fill the screen, people are all wide faced and short! Am i missing something?

Wolfman you sound like me. I got a 27 year old philco that outperforms new lcd. Philco every station is perfect. New LCD has to be adjusted for every channel, somewtimes every show. Progress??? Dave

HD 16:9 wide screen won't show what isn't there. Garbage in,garbage out.
A 4:3 signal in will black bar both sides. No different than a 4:3 TV black bars the top and bottom of the picture when supplied a 16:9 signal.

you can stretch the 4x3 signals and yes they will be wider... or you can go to a source that broadcast in hd and 16x9.. then you will see a full picture with correct demensions... dish tv is all digital and a very good price point for rural areas and you can get it with the hd package. catv were availible is part digital and somewhat noisy but has lots of hd content. if close to a city you can get digital tv over the air signal but not if far away. also if your in a area that offers fios or uverse, you can get a perfect signal over all digital networks like dish and direct tv.

You're not getting an HD signal. Do you have satelitte? If so you will see two choices for each channel that is offered in HD. Choose the HD channel.

I see the same thing on shows/channels that are not in HD. Some of the older show and movies are not HD.

Not every HD program is in 16:9 widescreen...
What are you feeding the TV with? And are you using the HDMI or component connections?

Check your onscreen menu and see if there's a spot to change aspect ratio. I had to change mine to get the right one after I switched from coax cable (incoming) to the 3 colored cables.

There should be a button on your remote that says "format", that will allow you to change the size of the picture. Like the other guys said, if your not receiving HD signal the picture will be narrow. I have had that happen on the weather channel where the picture would be fullscreen and they would go to a commercial break and come back and the picture would be narrow and then later it would be full screen.

Hi wolfman,

Goto your OCD and set your default size.

Older Tv shows at 4:3 look terrible at 16:9. Mine will auto default too the correct ratio that it was filmed in, unless the Tv station has over ridden that setting.

I use regular RCA cables too use the component function. Special cables are just not needed for DVD and normal Tv viewing.

We have Dish HD and watch all programs in the "Stretch" Mode. Any of the other modes show a distorted picture on our particular TV set. Are you on Sat TV,Cable or Antenna? Read your owners manual for the TV,should show how to view a decent picture given all the access's possible now adays. A distorted picture is totally unsuitable.

Are you on satellite. cable or antenna. You are not receiving HD probably. Call your signal supplier and ask for HD. Will cost more. Direct charges me 10 more per month for HD. When my contract is up I am switching to cable. Direct TV has so few good channels anymore that I can save lots of bucks by switching. I dont need 50 shopping channels, 2 gay channels, 20 gaming channels, BET, 16 heavy metal stations etc. Henry

I had an old 'regular' Zenith for years and it and no matter what show I watched it always fit the screen and looked good enough to me to watch. I guess nowdays there are too many people that have forgotten three channels you had to get up to change, not to mention the American flag flying when they all went off line at midnight. In the end I've got to agree with you 100%, progress, I don't think so....
