How far out of time is it? If it"s like 40 degrees off, then your distributer is out of sinc with your oil pump. They are connected, believe it or not. One tooth of the oil pump off to be exact.
You can be 180 degrees off and the engine will still run if you change the wires on the distributor. That is what happened when I reassembled my 101 Senior with the same engine. You need to stick your finger in #1 plug hole, and when compression pushes out finger, continue until you are at TDC. Then check you see where the rotor is pointed, and adjust from there.
