I read some posts on here a few days ago that might explain why the old time farmers didn't use antifreeze.
On the tractors that use the thermosiphon principle (no water pump) you need to mix the antifreeze and water before you put it in the radiator. Since antifreeze is thicker than water it doesn't circulate as well, and without the water pump to stir it up, it didn't mix. This caused some of them to overheat, even though they were full of coolant.
