I never did understand that either. A fellow about 4 miles from me has a very nicely restored JD 60 that is right now dissapearing under a snowdrift, but he has room for it under a roof. It's enough to make you shake your head.
About antifreeze, I've talked to a lot of oldtimers who just wouldn't use it and never did break that habit. When I got my '47 A, the former owner cautioned me to drain it before cold weather came. When I told him that I'd probably just put 50/50 in it, he had a fit. Said that it would "gum it up." I put the antifreeze in it anyway, and it has been just fine for 5 years now. I do know that some folks have tried to use 100% antifreeze in the past, and that does congeal under certain conditions and cause troubles. It's not meant to be used that way. Maybe this is where the water-only crowd gets their rationality?
