for what it's worth it's the actuall attachments to the trailer that count. One chain wound through the frame attached to both sides of the trailer only makes for one attachment point
(this is in reference actually to some of the posts in the previous thread) if you use one continuous chain you should shackle it to your load in such a way that one broken link does not compromise the entire chain.

I am curious tho about the differentiation between chains and straps and cables.
although this might be covered in Burrs link and I havent found it
