I have observed this in my cattle for years. Even late yesterday evening they were all huddled up out in the middle of the pasture. I always contributed it to their means of fighting the flies and horse flies. Whenever they switch their tails to swat the flies, the majority of those flies will land on a different animal. Pretty smart actually when you think about it.
