Good tractor either way but I would favor the 4240. I prefer the 466 in the 4240 versus the 404 in the 4040. Aside from the horsepower difference, I think the 466 has more torque to it. They tell me 404 engines are getting harder to come by if you have a disaster. Go for a quad-range equipped unit if you can. Sixteen speeds for the QR versus 8 for the Powershift or Synchro and typically less pricey to repair than the PS. Currently have one tractor (8430) with the sound Guard cab and think it's the best from that period. We have an IH 986 with factory cab and ran a White Field Boss to compare. They are probably going to be the most expensive proposition for that size from that era (late 1970's-early 1980's). Should be able to find something fairly good in the high teens $. Something with a high degree of quality will exceed 20,000. I am at a disadvantage because I do not get to see what they sell for in the Mid-West.
