Which tractor would you choose and why? Looking for a tractor to pull an 8 row splitter planter for beans and also to cut and square bale and roll hay. Open to suggestions but want something with a cab no older than these aged tractors and want about the same horses somewhere 90-100 hp. Thanks Guys

Good tractor either way but I would favor the 4240. I prefer the 466 in the 4240 versus the 404 in the 4040. Aside from the horsepower difference, I think the 466 has more torque to it. They tell me 404 engines are getting harder to come by if you have a disaster.
Go for a quad-range equipped unit if you can. Sixteen speeds for the QR versus 8 for the Powershift or Synchro and typically less pricey to repair than the PS.
Currently have one tractor (8430) with the sound Guard cab and think it's the best from that period. We have an IH 986 with factory cab and ran a White Field Boss to compare.
They are probably going to be the most expensive proposition for that size from that era (late 1970's-early 1980's). Should be able to find something fairly good in the high teens $. Something with a high degree of quality will exceed 20,000. I am at a disadvantage because I do not get to see what they sell for in the Mid-West.

The 4240 has about 20hp more with the bigger engine 466 rather than the 404 in the 4040.Tractor weight theirs about 2000lb difference in the two.Price of the two may dictate the one you want.

i have always liked te 4040's. at work my boss used to have a 4020 and a 4040. He said the 4020 would outwork the 4040 anyday of the week so he traded the 4040 in. (they have the same engine but the 4020 doesnt have all the extra things to run: extra hydraulics, air conditioning, heat etc)
nonetheless both are decent tractors. The 466 is supposed to be one of the best engines JD made of that era. For that reason i would go for the 4240.

I definitely agree about the 4240, as well as the Quad-Range over the Power Shift.
4040 is 90? hp, vs. the 4240 rated at 110. My 4240 makes 125. Transmission is a personal choice- personally, I prefer PS over any other. Ease of shifting between all gears is the reason, nice when cutting or baling. No need to change stations. Quad is ok with the hydraulic hi-lo, but goes only from one speed to another in each range- then it"s stop and shift. 466 is a more durable engine.

A Quad-range can be shifted 1/2 as many times non-stop which is 4 as an 8 speed Powershift. Shift lever from 1 to 2,depress with tractor in motion & shift to 3 then 4. Granted this works on road or light loads(baling/cutting) but not easy with heavy load(plow).
