I have a '48A so I presume they are alike. This a bit far fetched, but the only thing I could think of is the bronze bushing is worn sufficiently that excessive play exists between the bushing and the pully housing, allowing oil to seep through. AND/OR, although I can't remember the exact configuration of all the parts, maybe the main bearing gap is out of tolerence enough so an excessive amount of oil is thrown along the crankshaft, and the slinger (the gearlike thing) is not able to cope with the flow. That's my armchair guess anyway.
