I'm at 44 degrees 22 min latitude which puts me at about where Watertown/Fort Drum lies but we don't get as much snow here as out there. 20 below winter time temps are a little more moderate than when I was a kid. I remember seeing the thermometer at minus 40 at sunrise and then climb all the way up to minus 20 and then go back down to minus 40 at night. It still can be brutal but most folks either get used to it or they move away. As I recall, you're near Binghamton and that means you probably get a quite a bit of lake effect snow off from Ontario. Followed by cold blasts. We don't get much lake effect snow although they do up north. I don't have any cattle so usually can get away to warmer climate for a little while.
