Lightning can hit the power line 20 miles down the road and short the diodes in maintainers and chargers.I repair battery chargers,fence chargers and welders and see ligntning damage daily.Doesnt have to hit your barn.I did fire reports for our fire dept.Many fires are started with battery chargers.One fellow lost 2 auto service garages here to a battery charger.Three houses burned a few towns over, battery charger started the fire.Ive seen flames coming out of a battery charger.I use battery chargers only when I can watch them.Outdoors or in the shop when I am there.My friend lost his house to a battery charger fire in the mid 50s.
