Poor ignition from weak spark or poor timing can cause gas in the oil. If the cylinders are wet with unburned fuel it will thin the oil and get past the rings, you dont want to run it like this for long since obviously the thinned oil is not as good a lubricant, but the thinned oil can get by rings that are still within specs.
